How or Why?
Why did we get into motorcycle training?
One bad experience as a student. Upon further investigation, we learned of others with bad experiences. We attempted to resolve it by going through the proper channels. Ultimately, it became apparent that the only way to be taken seriously was to put ourselves in the hot seat. We jumped through all of the hoops, registered for and took our RCP in Paducah, Kentucky late August into early September 2022. Cassandra almost walked away on day 1. By November 2022, we were both attending the HDRA (Harley-Davidson Riding Academy) in Murfreesboro, TN. Because of the weather, we didn't get to teach any in Kentucky until 2023. We did spend the winter shadowing a facility in Pensacola, FL.
What do you dislike most about motorcycle training?
Honestly, it has to be the heat. Teaching in Kentucky and Indiana between May and July really does test the patience and dedication of both the riders and the instructors. As long as the riders are patient and agree to taking longer breaks, thus more time on the range, we can get through even 105 degree heat indexes.
How do you feel when a rider (student) 'fails'?
We don't consider it a 'failure' when a rider does not complete the training. We consider it a lesson learned. Perhaps the individual was not mentally or physically ready for the unknowns. Perhaps the individual has 'test anxiety' and needs a one-on-one. There are so many variables for a rider to be 'unsuccessful' BUT we work with the facility manager (RAM-riding academy manager at Harley) and together we offer the individual options and understanding.
Can anyone learn to ride a motorcycle?
Yes and no. Yes we can all learn. No, we aren't all successful at putting the lessons learned into motion. Riding a motorcycle is demanding mentally more than physically. Some may struggle with hand-to-foot coordination and that is okay. So long as we know you are committed to being safe, we will do our best to help you make this journey a reality.
